What Are Sharing Circles—and Why Do They Feel So Comforting, Even Among Strangers?

Sharing Circles are intentional, safe spaces created for people to come together around a specific theme—to share thoughts, feelings, and lived experiences.

Everyone enters the space carrying something they wish to express or process. And in choosing to show up, there’s already a quiet agreement: that this is a space without judgment. A space where each person will be met with respect, presence, and care.

When one person shares openly, it gently invites others to do the same. That collective vulnerability creates a kind of magic—one that fosters connection, trust, and an unspoken sense of belonging.

Why Do Sharing Circles Matter?

Here are a few ways these spaces can deeply support you:

1. You realise you’re not alone.
Whether it’s a life transition, a challenge you’re carrying, or a question you’re sitting with—you’ll often find others in the circle are going through something similar.
For example, in a Sharing Circle for new mothers returning to work, emotions like guilt, overwhelm, or loss of identity are almost always echoed across the room. And that shared experience makes you feel less alone, less “different.” It builds connection.

2. You hear fresh perspectives.
When others speak, they offer you a window into a different way of thinking or feeling. Without even intending to, their stories can expand your view of your own situation.

3. You feel heard, fully and freely.
There’s something quietly healing about being able to say how you feel—without being interrupted, judged, or fixed. This kind of deep listening allows for inner clarity. Often, the simple act of sharing brings a sense of order to your thoughts and emotions.

4. You reach deeper understanding.
Sometimes, it’s only when you speak something out loud—or hear someone else do so—that the root of your overwhelm or emotion begins to surface. The depth in these shared moments can be powerful.

5. You feel held, instead of isolated.
If you’ve been feeling disconnected, emotionally distant, or just a bit lost, circles can offer a gentle sense of grounding. You walk away feeling lighter—simply because you didn’t carry it all alone. In essence, Sharing Circles foster connection, communication, and community.
They remind us of something very simple, yet often forgotten: we all just want to be heard, understood, and accepted—as we are.
